There are many causes of joint pain arthritis knee pain, though the majority is from illnesses. Joint pain can also be felt from injuries, infections and some allergic reactions to medications. MALAYSIA has made significant efforts to tackle the AIDS scourge, which was acknowledged at an international conference in Vienna, but efforts must also be directed at addressing the problem among drug users and sex workers, writes ADEEBA KAMARULZAMAN.

After nearly three decades of the HIV pandemic and more than 33 million infections worldwide, more than 19,000 participants at the 18th international AIDS conference in Vienna last week were re- energised with some good news and new hopes in the search for effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Unveiled for the first time in Vienna were the results of a study on an anti-retroviral drug containing vaginal gel that could protect women against HIV infection. With up to 50 per cent of the global HIV infection occurring in women and rising rates of women becoming infected in Malaysia annually, this represents the most significant and promising result that will allow women to protect themselves from HIV during sexual intercourse.

Given that abstinence, using condoms and being faithful have been unsuccessful in preventing HIV infection, a vaginal microbicide gel is a critical step forward.

On the treatment front, although combination anti-retroviral therapy has changed what once was a universally fatal disease to a chronic disease, the need for life-long treatment makes this model not only medically unfavourable because of side effects and problems with compliance, but also financially unsustainable in the long run.

For all these reasons and given that candidate vaccines have thus far proven disappointing, the search for a cure becomes imperative.

Renewed hopes in the search of a cure have been ignited through better understanding of what happens to the virus once it enters the body. Coupled with discovery of new drugs that could eliminate latently infected cells, the feasibility of a “cure” by either eliminating the infection or a functional cure with complete suppression of the virus’s capacity to cause disease and to be transmitted seems more possible than ever before.

However, although the prospect of a cure is no longer improbable and a more effective microbicide has at last been found, both are still several years away from being commercially available and able to impact on what is already one of mankind’s greatest tragedies. Much is known about what works to prevent infection that can and should be employed immediately and to scale.

Of particular relevance to the Malaysian epidemic is that we know provision of clean needles and syringes and methadone treatment to drug users work. Here, Malaysia is leading the way compared with many other countries faced with similar drug injection epidemics

This year’s high school senior class scored more college scholarship offers than any in county history, according to public school officials.

The Class of 2010 reported they were offered $64.9 million – a solid jump from the $56.5 million reported by the class of 2009.

“In this economy, I couldn’t think of better news,” said Gayle Cicero, the county coordinator of school counseling.

The numbers are tracked and reported each year by school officials, who collect the information from students. Except for grants like the federal Pell Grants, all scholarships are counted – everything from need-based financial aid to athletic scholarships to scholarships awarded by companies and organizations.

Because the number reflects offers and not actual dollars used by students, some who applied to many colleges had lots of scholarships to report.

One Northeast High School student, Maya Mundell, netted about $1.15 million by scoring free rides to three colleges, plus the Gates Millennium Scholarship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Gates scholarship would pick up the tab for any of the six schools to which she was accepted, making her total more than $1 million. That made up a significant portion of the $4.8 million in scholarships netted by her class.

Some schools reported smaller amounts, some more. North County High School reported just $1.7 million, compared with South River High School’s $9.3 million

The Greeks called them ?Clepsydra? ? which translates as ?water thief?. It is believed that clepsydras were introduced from Egypt into Greece and, later, from there into Rome.

An improved version of the water clock – more elaborate and impressive mechanized – was developed by Greek and Roman horologists and astronomers around 325 B.C. This version had a face with a hand that pointed the hour as the water level changed. Sometime after 100 B.C., a Greek astronomer ? Andronikos ? built a stone water clock in the Athens marketplace. His water tower – known today as the Tower of the Winds ? showed the time with both sundials and mechanical hour indicators. It also displayed the seasons of the year and astrological dates and periods.

Another famous water clock was built in China by Su Sung in 1088 A.D. It was a tower over 30 feet tall and incorporated a few mechanisms. It had five front panels with doors that opened to show mechanical figurines that rang bells and held tablets indicating the hour.
